Weekend Herb Blogging #102
Sep 29, 2007 Noticias
Ulrike from Kuchenlatein is the host of this edition of Weekend Herb Blogging and once again I’ve been tempted by something new at the market.
These rather unusually coloured citrus I spied at the Turin Market immediately got my attention and I knew I just had to try them. Some of there eaten but some have made the journey with me to Florence.
Unfortunately I can’t give you an exact name as yet as I’ve seen them referred to as various things but they are clementine like - there’s some acid to cut the sweetness, a bit like a lemony orange. On a warm day, they are very refreshing.
I can now give you a name - they are Miyagawa and they originally come from Japan but are now grown in Sicily.
The Florence market has been full of wonderful fruit so I thought why not make an Italian style fruit salad - Macedonia di Frutta using these refreshing citrus fruits with the best of the days market finds.
Macedonia di Frutta/Marinated Fruit Salad
strawberries, halved
raspberries, hulled and left whole
wild strawberries, left whole
peaches, diced in bite sized pieces
white grapes, halved
fig, cut into bite sized pieces
silician citrus, peeled and cut into half, then broken into segments
melon, cut into small dice
fruit juice, I used a mix of apple and pear
Prosecco, sparkling white wine
Naturally enough you can use whatever fruit you like - this is just what I used. Try to cut the fruit into even-sized pieces
Place all the cut fruit into a sealable bowl then pour in the fruit juice and Prosecco - use enough to just cover the fruit. Make sure you taste and adjust the proportions to suit you.
Chill in the fridge to allow the fruit to macerate.
You can serve this with ice-cream, cream or yoghurt but when in Italy, use gelato!
In this case it’s a lovely Fior di Latte Gelato from a local Gelateria (in case you’re wondering the dark one is Nocciola, a hazelnut gelato)

Weekly Google Code Roundup: New Gears libraries, fixing mashups, GWT marries the iPhone, and more
Sep 28, 2007 Noticias
It was perfect timing for Doug Crockford, the legendary Ajax curmudgeon, to come to Google to discuss Gears and the mashup problem. The same week that he chatted about the issues that we face, we saw some innovation and fun mashups abound (for example, this Campaign Trails mashup created with the Google Mashup Editor).
Just a few days after we released the ability to do authenticated, cross domain mashups with Google Calendar the JupiterIT folk created Traffik, a mashup that combines your Google Calendar with a Google Map, allowing you to login to view private events and create news ones. It is great to see early experiments with the API such as the Digg Oracle’s use of WorkerPool that we went into more detail on.
Vortex is another library that sits on top of Google Gears to add functionality through a nice layer of abstraction. The library will detect if you are online or offline, and have a system to handle one use case for sync issues. Brian Dunnington liked what he saw with the Dojo Offline Toolkit, and took a lot of the ideas from there, giving us a version that isn’t coupled to a particular Ajax library. Libraries like this are exactly what we want to see. Gears is aiming to give the community rock solid, low level components, and we expect to see interesting abstractions on top. XMLHttpRequest is to Prototype/Dojo/GWT as Gears it to [insert your cool new offline framework here].
After the GWT 1.4 launch / coming out of beta was announced, Bob Vawter of the GWT team was able to let his hair down and he created a GWT application for the iPhone to see what the experience was like. His take-away was:
The Google Web Toolkit can be used to create applications that, in the same code base, work well on an iPhone and a traditional desktop browser.
You can read more about the development of the GWT Feed Reader.
In other GWT news we interviewed folks from Queplix, an open source CRM company, about their experience building their products which use a lot of GWT, various Google APIs, and even the Google Mini!
Sticking to JavaScript for just a touch more, the Google Maps API team have added a new Local Search Control which makes it simple to search the map that you are on. You can add this control to your Maps mashup with a line of JavaScript.
In other API news, Jeff Scudder announced a new release of the GData Python client library which gives you access to various new releases and a refactored codebase.

Pacific Legal Tech 2007
Sep 28, 2007 Noticias
The Pacific Legal Technology Conference is getting set for another run here in Vancouver on October 10th. And they’ve just updated their website, so please do check it out!
I’m also happy to announce that for the first time, I’m going to have the honour of being one of the speakers! I’ll be doing two sessions at this year’s event.
First up, I’ll be joining Doug Jasinski from Vancouver’s Skunkworks and Kevin O’Keefe from Seattle based Lexblog in a truly West Coast flavoured session on legal web marketing (TIP3). This exact group did a similar session on the topic of law blogs for the Vancouver LMA last year, and it offered a great mix of perspectives. Hopefully we can replicate that same feeling, and still expand the topic to cover all the new web marketing strategies & directions that are currently available.
And for the second session, Kevin and I are pulling together a talk on Innovative Uses of Legal Technology (TIP4). I’m hoping to cover a mix of both public facing web strategies, and also look at some of the ways in which law firms are innovating in-house behind the firewall. Obviously Kevin and I are both web guys, so this won’t likely be much of a gadget session. I look at things with a bent towards the efficiency of content delivery — a Librarian / KM guy’s thought pattern — so please don’t expect me to build a scanner from your camera phone. ![]()
Looking forward to seeing some friendly faces on October 10th! PLTC registration info is here.
Pici with Fresh Porcini and Pecorino
Sep 28, 2007 Noticias
This edition of Presto Pasta Night sees me back cooking “live” so to speak, it’s just that my location has changed and I am now in Florence.
Yesterday it basically rained all the way from Turin to Florence and it was still raining when I went to the market this morning.
I’ll be combining the rather wintery conditions with typical produce of the region to produce a dish fit for not only the weary traveller but anyone at all.
One of the first things I bought this morning was fresh Porcini

the rain just said mushroom weather to me.
From my last visit I knew there’s a stall that makes fresh pasta so why not take advantage of that fact

Here they are busy preparing the pasta for the day.

The pasta I’ve chosen is called Pici

Pici are a Tuscan pasta that you can see are somewhat like a course and thick spaghetti.
To keep in the Tuscan spirit the cheese I’m using is a Pecorino

that hails from the Tuscan town of Arezzo.
Putting all these ingredients together I get this

Pici with Fresh Porcini and Pecorino
fresh Pici
fresh porcini, cleaned and sliced
fresh thyme leaves
red onion, sliced finely
1 garlic clove, sliced finely
pecorino, roughly grated
salt and freshly ground black pepper
Heat a little butter and olive oil in a pan and when the butter has melted add the onion and garlic and cook gently until softened and beginning to colour.
Add a little more butter followed by the sliced porcini and sauté until soft and golden, sprinkle over with the fresh thyme and a some rough sliced slivers of pecorino.
Allow the cheese to melt before adding the cooked pasta, along with a grind of salt and white pepper. Toss this around to allow the pasta to soak in all the pan juices before serving into bowls.
Sprinkle over with a little more pecorino and a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil.
